LILIA CHAK

On a tacky door – the traces of generations,
on a sea shell – coition and love,
in rubbish – an unknown flower,
in a broken roof – the sky,
in a falling drop – the aspiration for continuity,
in serenity – movement, in movement – routine,
in routine – the incredible.

Alexander Altshuler, poet – poem on the works of Lilia Chak

Lilia Chak (b. St. Petersburg, 1966) is an Israeli artist, designer, and science-art researcher based in Jerusalem since 1990. Her interdisciplinary practice spans New Media, Science-art, Bio-art, Dendro-art, AI-generated art, video, photography, installation, and performance.

In 2022, Chak received her PhD from the Art & Science Department at Sorbonne University (Paris). Since 2024, she has been a Postdoctoral Fellow at Bar-Ilan University, researching development perspectives of AI-based Bio-art. She is the author of Contemporary Practices in Bio-art: When a Tree Becomes an Artwork (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2023), which investigates the relationship between artists and plants, the recreation of vanished botanical species, and the role of biological technologies as artistic media. She was the first to introduce the term Dendro-art into international discourse as a new subdivision of Bio-art.

Chak is a researcher in the Sorbonne project EDEN, which aims to conceptualize a contemporary Garden of Eden by integrating innovative technologies into art and proposing new ecological strategies. Her work has been exhibited in over 30 venues internationally, including Ars Electronica (Linz), BOZAR (Brussels), Shenzhen Art Museum, CICA Museum (South Korea), Negev Museum of Art (Beer-Sheva), Museo Orto Botanico (Rome), and Matsudo International Science Art Festival (Tokyo). In 2024, her work was presented at the 10th Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary Art.

Her work has been recognized with several awards: Prix Tartuffe nomination (2009), first prize at Cellcom Company art competition from 18,000 entries (2010), and in 2025, awards from WMF PROMPT Magazine (Bologna), AIIF of Chung-Ang University (Seoul), and Project 59 Inc. (New York) for her AI video art projects.

Chak coordinates the Leonardo/ISAST LASER Talks in Jerusalem through the non-profit INEMEA, fostering dialogue between local and international art-science communities. Since 2021, she has taught "Art, Biology and Ecology" at Shenkar College of Engineering, Design and Art (Tel Aviv).
