Lilia Chak is an Israeli artist, designer and Science-art researcher (b. St. Petersburg, 1966). She is an interdisciplinary artist who works in New Media art, including Science-art, Bio-art, Dendro-art, AI-generated art, Generative art, Video art, Photography, Installation, and Performance.
Since 1990, Lilia Chak lives in Jerusalem. In 2009 Lilia Chak was nominated the Prix Tartuffe for the "Ferror" exhibition. In 2010, she was awarded the first prize at the art competition (from among 18,000 entries) organized by Cellcom Company, Israel.
In 2022, Lilia Chak defended her PhD thesis in the Sorbonne’s Art & Science Department (Paris). She is the author of the book
"Contemporary Practices in Bio-art: When a Tree Becomes an Artwork", published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in 2023. The book explores the interrelationship between artists and plants, the recreation of vanished species of plants, and, more broadly, environmental protection.
Lilia Chak explores the intersections of art and biology and proves that new
biological technologies can be used as a new medium for art.
She introduced into the international lexicon a new term – Dendro-art as a new subdivision of Bio-art.
Lilia Chak participates in Sorbonne project EDEN.
The EDEN project is aimed at creating a new Garden of Eden as the ultimate goal of introducing innovative technologies to art and using unorthodox thinking to solve ecological problems.
She has taken part in Dendro-art exhibitions such as
Museo Orto Botanico (Rome);
Ars Electronica (Linz);
BOZAR (Brussels);
Matsudo International Science Art Festival (Tokyo);
Negev Museum of Art (Beer-Sheva), and many more.
Her work has been presented internationally in exhibitions, articles and lectures.
Since 2021, she teaches her experimental practical and theoretical "Art, Biology and Ecology" course at SHENKAR – Shenkar College of Engineering, Design and Art (Tel Aviv).
Lilia Chak is a member of the UNESCO Association of Artists, Tel Aviv branch.
